How to verify a Lithuanian identity card online?

What are the differences between the “Standard” and “Plus” verification levels of

the Lithuanian identity card?

We offer two levels of analysis and validation: the “Standard” level and the “Plus” level, which differ by the elements analyzed.

The “Standard” level allows you to:

• Perform automatic optical character recognition (OCR) of the document
• Extract the information
• Verify the format and consistency of the information present in the MRZ (document number format, personal number format if present, date formats and consistency, etc.)
• Automatically check that the expiration date has not passed
• Verify the MRZ security keys

The “Plus” level additionally allows you to:

• Read and extract the personal number from the barcode on the back of the card (Asmens kodas)
• Compare this personal number with the one present in the MRZ
• Extract information from the personal number and compare it with the information on the card (gender, date of birth, serial number, etc.)
• Verify the check digit of the personal number
• Verify that the document’s validity period is consistent with the holder’s age (this may vary)

Advanced Forensic Analysis with the “Pro” level

With the Pro analysis level, verification goes beyond MRZ data: the system also analyzes the uploaded file itself to detect manipulations invisible to the naked eye.

This forensic analysis includes in particular:

– extraction and analysis of file metadata
– document integrity verification
– detection of modified documents or files generated from templates (Photoshop, recomposed scans, etc.)

Even if the MRZ is valid, altered or artificially created documents are identified thanks to these advanced checks.

Forensic analysis runs in parallel with MRZ reading, and results are available within seconds in the web application as well as in the detailed report.

All common formats are supported: images (JPG, PNG, WebP…) and PDF documents.

What document formats are accepted?

You can send your documents as jpg / jpeg / png images or as PDF files.

Scans/photos do not need to be cropped or retouched: they are automatically detected during the Lithuanian identity card validity verification.

It is possible to send the front and back of the card on the same scan and in any order (front first and back below, or vice versa): they will be sorted and recognition will be done without problem.

The same applies to tilt: scans can be slightly tilted or poorly oriented; our service will recognize them correctly!

How does Lithuanian identity card validity verification work?

An automatic reading zone, or optical reading zone, is an area on an official document reserved for reading, identification, and validation of that document.

Thus, documents such as passports, national identity cards, residence permits, and driver’s licenses may or must contain, depending on the country and document version, an optical reading zone.

It is located in the lower part of identity documents: it contains all the information present on the document with security keys allowing verification of their authenticity and that they have not been modified.

The information found varies depending on the type of document.

Cards issued since 2021 have three lines of text, each containing alphanumeric characters.

The data extracted from the Lithuanian identity card MRZ band are as follows:

• First line:

1. Document Type: 2 characters, code indicating the document type, represented by the letters “ID”.
2. Issuing Country: 3 characters, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code of the issuing country.
3. Card Number: 8 characters, unique card number.
4. Separator: 1 character, “<“.
5. Check Digit: 1 character, check digit of the unique card number.
6. Personal Number: 11 characters, personal number of the holder.
7. End of line: “<” to complete the line.

• Second line:

1. Date of Birth: 6 characters, year, month, and day of birth in YYMMDD format.
2. Check Digit: 1 character, check digit of the date of birth.
3. Gender: 1 character, “M” for male, “F” for female.
4. Expiration Date: 6 digits, expiration date of the card in YYMMDD format.
5. Check Digit: 1 character, check digit of the expiration date.
6. Country Code: 3 characters, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code of the holder’s nationality.
7. End of line: 11 characters, chevrons to complete the line.
8. Check Digit: 1 character, check digit of the concatenation of characters from line 1 (6-15), line 2 (1-7), and line 2 (9-15).

• Third line:

1. Holder’s Last and First Names: holder’s last and first names, starting with the last name followed by the first name. The last name and first name are separated by two < characters. In the case of compound last names, compound first names or multiple first names, they are separated by the < character. Spaces and apostrophes are replaced by the < character and the name is truncated to 30 characters if necessary, with any accents on letters removed. The line is then completed with the < character.

What is the barcode present on Lithuanian biometric identity cards?

There is a barcode in the center of the Lithuanian biometric identity card: it encodes the personal number of the cardholder, which is unique and also found on the front under the label “Personal number” or “Asmens kodas”.

What is the personal identification number (Asmens Kodas) present on Lithuanian identity cards?

A national identification number (NIN) is used by governments of many countries to uniquely identify their citizens or residents for employment, taxation, social benefits, healthcare, banking, and other governmental functions.

It allows authorities to use a unique identifier linked to a database, thus reducing the risk of identification errors. It is often found on citizens’ national identity documents.

The Lithuanian personal number is therefore the equivalent of the French social security number (NIR).

How is the Lithuanian personal code (Asmens Kodas) composed?

In Lithuania, the personal code (asmens kodas) consists of 11 digits and currently takes the form G YYMMDD NNN C, where G corresponds to gender and century of birth, YYMMDD to the date of birth, NNN to the serial number, and C to the check digit.

In this system, the first digit (G) indicates both the person’s gender (odd for male, even for female) and their century of birth.

The last digit represents the check digit used to verify the validity of the constituent information.
