It is a document that is requested as part of multiple procedures, both administrative and personal (as proof of resources for opening a bank account, renting a property, etc.).

What are the prohibited mentions on the payslip?

On the other hand, certain mentions are prohibited.

This information concerns the exercise of the right to strike or the duties of staff representatives.

The nature and amount of the remuneration associated with the staff representation activity must be mentioned on a form annexed to the pay slip.

It is up to the employer to draw it up and provide it to the employee.

Second step to check a payslip online: make sure that these elements are NOT present!

What are the employer’s obligations regarding the payslip?

For the delivery of an electronic pay slip, the employer must inform the employee of the terms and conditions of access to this document. The employee has the option of refusing the electronic receipt of his or her pay slip and must notify the employer.

The employer is required to keep a copy of the pay slip (in paper or electronic form) on the company’s premises for a period of 5 years.

Beyond these 5 years, payslips may no longer be directly accessible within the company (although they should not be abolished). In this case, the employer must guarantee the employee the availability of his or her payslips:

  • for a period of 50 years from the date of their issuance, or
  • or for 6 years after the employee’s retirement.

How to check if a pay slip is fake?

To verify the authenticity of a payslip, it is advisable to consider the following points:

  • Check that the company exists : Make sure that the company really exists by publishing a SIRENE situation notice from the State, for example (at the following address: https://avis-situation-sirene.insee.fr/), and that the information is consistent with that on the payslip (address, SIRET, etc.).
  • Review the quality of the document : Fake payslips often have poor quality, with spelling, grammar, or layout errors. They can also be blurry or appear to have been altered: all of this can be spotted quite easily.
  • Check the amounts and calculations : Longer and more complex, check that all the calculations are accurate, as well as the amounts that appear on the payslip. To make it simple and go quickly, you just have to take the gross salary, deduct all the employee contributions to arrive at the net before tax. In this case, income tax will have to be deducted again to arrive at the net paid. We will also be able to control paid leave, annual totals, etc.
  • Look for irregularities in earnings : If the salary seems too high for the position or industry, or if it remains the same each month without variation, it may be suspicious.
  • Examine the amounts on the payslip : Sums that are too “round”, without decimals, can be a warning sign.
  • Check Social Security and Tax Identification Numbers : If these numbers are missing, incorrect, or don’t match the employee, it may indicate fraud.
  • Confirm employment : If possible, contact the employer to confirm the person’s employment. You can also use social networks, LinkedIn for example if the person has an account. An inability to confirm employment or information that is inconsistent with the pay slip can be signs of fraud.
  • Request the tax notice : If you can, request the tax notice for additional verification.
